Meet Arcare Cheltenham’s Head Chef, Myra Stephanie Gerardo Magsalin.

Chef Steph has worked in the Arcare Cheltenham community for just over two years.

Q. What do you enjoy about your role?
I enjoy everything I do, but most of all putting a smile to our clients faces, and making them feel loved, special and cared for by providing them quality and delicious food that they deserved. At Arcare Cheltenham, we have a very accommodating and caring nurses, who provide tender loving care to our clients.

Q. What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?
I love the working environment itself. I enjoy having the harmonious connection with the care staff, lifestyle staff, nurses and manager. Working in an environment where you have the utmost support from the residence manager is one of the best part.

Q. What are your favourite stories from working at Arcare Cheltenham?
There are so many stories to tell, but my favourite one is seeing happiness and contentment of our clients. Our clients are very grateful and appreciative, even if they are having a hard time (Mobility wise). To come down all the way through to the kitchen, just to personally give me a hand shake and a tap on the shoulder while saying thank-you, gives me more motivation to continue providing them the best food I can with my team. I couldn’t have made it this far without their support.

Q. What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?
Always decide from your heart. Always invest your 100- 110% of love and dedication to whatever you do without expecting anything in return.

Q. What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I have got few hobbies, but obviously I love and enjoy cooking and as a party planner on my spare time. I also love simple road trip driving by the bay, while listening to smooth music.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?
I really enjoyed the opportunity to work and meet a great variety of people. Giving the chance to get involved in all activities, share my talents and to feel that your part of the family is a heart-warming experience.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?
As a lifestyle assistant, it is always pleasant to remember the happy times with residents smiling and laughing whether doing sing-along, dancing or having coffee enjoying the sunshine in the garden and knowing that I made a positive impact in their lives.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?
I have two: Firstly, ‘Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.’ Secondly, ‘Everyday, do something that will lead you closer to God.’

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
Karaoke, ballroom dancing, watching movies, gardening and doing fun outdoor activities with my family.

I joined Arcare in 2017 as a Registered Nurse and have had the pleasure of working at various Arcare residences since.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?
I appreciate that my role and working in aged care gives me the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. I enjoy that I get to build relationships with residents, their families and the team members. It’s a close-knit community here at Arcare Brighton.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?
Not a story, but one aspect of working at Arcare that I cherish the most is being able to listen to the life stories of the residents. Whether it be a story of their childhood, a tale of romance or recounting their courageous acts during the war, each story is unique, fascinating and cultivates a new perspective on life.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?
I swear by the famous saying by Carl W. Buehner, “They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel”. I truly believe that being kind and compassionate towards one another is the way to go about life.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
I enjoy camping, hiking and photography. I find spending time out in the nature is very rejuvenating and also gives me the opportunity to spend quality time with my family and friends.

I enjoy being able to guide and support families during this stressful time of entering their loved one into aged care and do whatever I can to make their transition as easy as possible.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?
It has happened with many incoming residents over the past 9 years when they tell me how lucky they are to have their Daughter/Son/Family looking after them and helping them with their admission.

I always tell them “it’s definitely not luck, you are getting back what you gave.”

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?
Surround yourself with people that make you happy, life is better when you’re laughing.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
Photography, Beach Walks, Yoga, Visiting Galleries.

Lee Bellhouse – General Service Manager.

What Arcare residence do you work at?
Arcare Maroochydore.

How long have you been working at Arcare?
Six and a half years. I completed my placement in October 2014 with Arcare Maroochydore and was then employed in a casual position which commenced in February 2015. The beginning of 2016 I was offered a position in reception 3 days a week and continued to work 2 days as a PSW. I then moved over into the payroll position 3 days per week and continued 2 days as PSW. The beginning of 2017 I took on a 12-month contract to cover the position of General Service Manager. At the end of 2018 I was then offered the position as General Service Manager and am still currently in this role. I am very grateful that I have been given the opportunity to progress within the company and work across several different roles.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?
Working in aged care is extremely rewarding and satisfying. Knowing I am making a positive impact in someone’s daily life gives me great enjoyment. It gives me the opportunity to meet a wide variety of older people and it’s heart-warming listening to their It can be challenging at times but the rewarding feeling I receive from this job, ways out the challenges.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?
There have been a lot of special moments, although the highlights are always watching our clients sing along and dance during concerts and entertainment – it brings us all joy. Another memorable moment or I should say moments, have been the weekly Friday afternoon visits by one of our clients to my office. We would spend time chatting and laughing together about some of the silliest things and other times we would sit in silence whilst I continued to complete my tasks. Either way we would just enjoy each other’s company.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?
A simple smile. That’s the start of opening your heart and being compassionate to others.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
Spending time with family and friends. Love the ocean, beach, long walks and gardening.

Titus Feliciano RN Clinical Educator

This week we get to know more about Titus Feliciano who is a part of the Learning and Development Team in Arcare Aged Care as a one of the Registered Nurse (RN) – Clinical Educators based in Victoria.

What Arcare residence do you work at?

I am based in Head Office in Victoria and look after multiple residences including the North West Region of Victoria: Sydenham, Hillside, Burnside, Maidstone, Waterview, Portarlington and Point Lonsdale. Our team is flexible and support each other by being available if needed in all of the Arcare Residences in Victoria.

How long have you been working at Arcare?

I have worked in Arcare since 2012 as a Personal Support Worker when I was a student nurse. Once I obtained my Registration in 2013 as an RN, I had the opportunity to complete an Aged Management Graduate Course. I have worked as a Clinical Care Coordinator in Arcare Maidstone in 2016, and I officially joined the Learning and Development Team in 2017 and have been enjoying working in this dynamic team since then.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?

I enjoy inspiring and contributing to the positive culture at Arcare. To be able to educate and support our team members to deliver high quality care to our residents is so fulfilling. I love travelling to all residences and meeting the various team members across Arcare Aged Care. Overall, I love the culture at Arcare as we have really friendly and welcoming team members.

I also love the flexibility of my current role as my Manager and the Learning and Development Lead are very positive and supportive with all of our team members. We have very unique personalities within our team and I love working as a Clinical Educator.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?

I remember being able to support a resident that was having trouble settling in, and I got along really well with her and was able to support her through this time. She opened up to me about her life, her personal health, and shared the challenges that she had been going through transitioning into living in an aged care setting. She had been very thankful that I could spend time with her, to chat with her and understand her situation because of her circumstances. She really was a pleasant woman, but just needed that extra empathy and understanding, and I was able to assist with passing these insights to our clinical team at the time, so that they could support her. Since then, this resident’s outlook on life improved. It reinforced what I felt about making a positive difference in the lives of residents, even though it is just a representation of just one resident.

Another thing that is also worth mentioning is that on multiple occasions, we have received amazing responses from people such as visitors, ambulance officers or family members who walk into the front door of Arcare Residences and are surprised by the warm experience. We receive compliments on how good Arcare feels and looks, and that it doesn’t feel like an aged care home at all, but a great place to stay in.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?

That life is precious, and time is a gift from God. Each moment is worth cherishing whether good or bad, knowing all experiences shape who we are and who we’ll become. I’m a Christian and I always love reflecting in God’s words in the bible and my favourite life verse is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path straight”.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

I love Plants! I want to turn our house into an indoor jungle to bring nature inside our house. I also love adventures, adrenaline filled activities and travelling around the world. Currently I’ve visited about 14 countries, but due to COVID we have stopped travelling for a while, but we’ve been exploring the beauty and hidden gems of Victoria instead.

Today we speak to Arcare Balnarring’s fresh new face, Fiona Smith who is the first person you see as you enter this brand new 5-star residence.

What is your name and role at Arcare?

My name is Fiona Smith and I am the Receptionist and Administration Officer.

What Arcare residence do you work at?

I’m lucky enough to work at the stunning new Arcare Balnarring residence.

How long have you been working at Arcare?

I started working for Arcare in October this year.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?

I love the caring atmosphere here at Arcare, the residence is beautifully decorated and it really is such pleasure to come to work everyday.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?

When our first resident came into the residence it was so exciting! We’d been setting up the residence, making sure that everything was perfect and all we needed was our first residents to enter the doors. Mable and Edna arrived and everyone welcomed them with open arms (COVID safe of course!).

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?

Life is too short to worry about thing you can’t change. Be grateful for what you have and tell people who are dear to you that they are loved.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

I love doing anything creative. I’ve recently discovered fluid art which is so easy and looks amazing.

My name is Likando Likando, I am the commissioning manager for Balnarring.

Are you a local to the Balnarring/Mornington Peninsula area?

I am local to the Mornington Peninsula.

How many years have you been in Aged Care? Any relevant experience we can share?

I have been a nurse for 24 years and in aged care management for 11 years.

What was it about Arcare/this role that attracted you?

The unique Arcare organisational culture that focuses on building quality relationships and support for staff is what attracted me, also the opportunity to be part of the commissioning team presented a good challenge.

What are you looking forward to in your role at Arcare Balnarring?

I am looking forward to creating positive, lasting relationships with our new residents, the Balnarring community and bringing quality five-star residential aged care to them.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?

What I enjoy most and have done for many years is nursing with a special interest in aged care.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?

I believe in always treating others how I would like to be treated.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

I am a hobby farmer, I like feeding and talking to my Alpacas, I like horses, and, in the summer, I go jet skiing, camping and fishing.

This week for our regular People of Arcare series celebrating the wonderful 5-star team members in the Arcare community, we talk to award winning Atsuko Inada (Azy) who was recently crowned an ‘Aged Care Angel’ in a competition out of 500 nominations. We gain an insight on Azy’s motivations, thoughts about working at Arcare and what she does outside of work.

What is your name and role?

My name is Astuko Inada (Azy) and I am a Personal Carer & Physio Aid Assistant. Also, sometimes I work as a Lifestyle assistant too.

What Arcare residence do you work at and how long have you worked there?

I work at Arcare North Lakes and have been working there for over 12 years ( since 2009 July).

What do you love about working at Arcare?

I feel privileged to be involved in this part of someone’s life.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?

When I work in the units I talk to the residents, sing, dance, laugh together and see the resident’s smile – it truly makes me happy.

When I started working Arcare, I was pregnant. I appreciated the fact that Arcare hired me and everyone actually cared about me and my pregnancy – including management, care staff and residents. I worked only 3 months before giving birth and they even organised me a surprise baby shower. I didn’t have family in Australia, except my husband at that time and we had just moved. I felt so appreciated and impressed by how Arcare supported me.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?

Be happy. If I want to make someone smile, I have to enjoy life and be happy.

Be positive. If something bad happens or a mistake has been made, it means I can learn from that experience.

Be thankful. I am thankful to be alive, for family, friends, my neighbours, colleagues, work, and having food and a home to sleep in. I am even thankful to the sun and the rain!

Karma. Do to others what you would like to receive yourself.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

I usually go to the gym and beach three times a week. It keeps enhance my good health and reduce any day to day stress I might have.

What is your name, role and Arcare residence? How long have you worked at Arcare?

My name is Preeti Dean and I work as a Quality Support Officer. I have been working with Arcare for 13 years now.

What’s your journey at Arcare, have you started in one role and transitioned to another?

I’ve had a special journey at Arcare. I started as a Kitchen Assistant, then while studying nursing I worked as a Personal Support Worker. I then became a Nurse Unit Manager which progressed to Clinical Care Coordinator and now Quality Support Officer.

What do you enjoy about your role and working in aged care?

As a quality support, I love that I can support clients to ensure they receive the best possible care.

What is a memorable moment or story you recall working at your residence with either a resident or a team member?

The memorable moment for me would be when I became a Clinical Lead at Arcare Maidstone, the management and team organised a celebration to welcome me to my new role which made me feel loved.

What pearls of wisdom or words of encouragement do you live by?

Life is too short. Live the way you want to live today, have fun and regret nothing.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

Shopping (excellent therapy), spending time with my family, weekend catch up with friends and doing Pilates.

What would you tell future aged care workers?

Arcare is the best place to work at!

Susanna has shared that “I never wanted to work in aged care, however, I was invited to a seminar that was held by Arcare and since that day I have never looked back. I love to bring joy into residents lives but in return they bring joy into mine.” Outside of work, Susanna loves cooking and singing, and karaoke Thursdays at work are her favorite activity.

What do you enjoy about your role?

When clients tell me how much they love me and thank me for making their day so joyful.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

Lots of patience, compassion, let’s make their last journey in life as happy and joyful as we can. Treat them as you would your own parents, with kindness and respect.

What is your special talent that you enjoy doing outside of work? How did you learn this talent?

Cooking, my dear mother taught me.

Can you share one fun fact about yourself?

I love singing, karaoke Thursdays at work is my favorite activity, I feel like I’m a rock star!

The atmosphere at work is amazing we are blessed to have such a fantastic new Manager Dee.

When I come to work every Monday and my clients are genuinely happy to see me. They always greet me with a big smile and tell me that it is always good to have me back.

Learn as much as they can. Being passionate about their job and the care they provide to the clients.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I often watch cooking shows and I enjoy cooking in my spare time. On the weekends, I usually enjoy going for a short drives with family and friends.

What do you enjoy about your role?

Being able to assist residents when needed and listening to their stories. A familiar face regularly helps them feel at home and makes them feel safe and happy.

What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?

I love being able to make the residents feel safe, comfortable, and happy. Listening to the residents when they need to talk, we are like their family.

What are your favourite stories of working at your residence / with your team / with a client?

I have cared for many lovely residents; you make friends with some of the residents’ family’s and stay in touch after their loved ones have passed away. We had a resident called Betty and she was always such a character; she would tell you the best jokes and amazing stories about her life. It’s always so interesting to hear about the residents’ lives, they always have the best stories.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

You need to be caring, patient, kind and listen.

I get to make an impact on residents daily living.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

Working in Aged Care is very much people based as residents are our priority, so make sure you have a genuine love for people.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love to play sport and go on walks along the waterfront, and I love going down to my local coffee shop and getting a coffee.

For this week’s edition of #PeopleofArcare we introduce Arcare Glenhaven, Clinical Lead Sishir Basnet. He started working at Arcare six months ago but has been in the industry for over 10 years and has many pearls of wisdom to share.

“Getting up to go to work is much easier when you know that what you do has a positive impact on the community. It gives you the opportunity to meet a wide variety of older people and make a tremendous difference in their quality of life.”

What do you enjoy about your role?

I appreciate my role as I get to coordinate and oversee activities of the clinical team members to ensure compassionate, effective, and efficient delivery of high-quality clinical care for our clients in a safe and friendly environment. Also, I get to alleviate some of the challenges within the healthcare system to create positive change.

How does this company differ from others you’ve worked for?

First and foremost, priority for our organization is our clients. Arcare has a power of understanding and expertise to provide highest level of services with homely feeling. We tend to learn and see things from a different perspective from our elderly people who have years of experience and the time to gain wisdom.

What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?

I’ve been in this industry for more than 10 years and I’ve always loved doing what I do. The joy you can put on someone’s face, just by being yourself. Getting up to go to work is much easier when you know that what you do has a positive impact on the community. It gives you the opportunity to meet a wide variety of older people and make a tremendous difference in their quality of life.

What are your favourite stories of working at your residence / with your team / with a client?

When I try to think of one favourite stories, I don’t have one moment or one client in particular. I have a collage in my mind of moments and people and feelings that I’ll never forget. Every day is a new and beautiful experience for me with my clients that I will cherish for my entire life.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

Our Care Workers are carefully chosen for their commitment to providing professional care. Looking after an elderly person requires a caring nature. Knowing how to make someone feel well cared for is key in making sure they are happy, settled, and secure. Words are not enough. Kind actions go a long way towards being caring and can make all the difference to an elderly person. I would expect few of these characteristics in our team members. And having patience in yourself is the most important, and of course there are various trainings and support systems to guide every team member for their professional development.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy spending quality time with my wife. My hobbies – playing football, listening to music, and watching movies.

What is your special talent that you enjoy doing outside of work? How did you learn this talent?

I am extremely fascinated about playing sports especially soccer, I have been playing since I was a kid with my neighbours and my school friends, my biggest inspiration is Messi.

Can you share one fun fact about yourself? It could be an interesting experience that you had, a quirky talent or your favourite recipe.

I try to cook at times. I love cooking chicken and lamb. I used to cook lamb and cauliflower together, making a gravy by adding various spices and back then when I invented my own recipes, I used to share it with my neighbours, and they tend to love it. It goes really well with hot steamy rice.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I really enjoy helping the residents, having the opportunity to onboard and train new team members, and having the responsibility for the smooth running of the Laundry Department at the residence.

How does this company differ from others you’ve worked for?

Arcare provides top care for not only the residents but also for team members.

What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?

Management at Arcare Warriewood is very supportive and nurturing. There is lots of room for growth and development both within the role you are in, through added responsibilities, as well as throughout the facility. I like working in Aged Care because I like to spend time with the residents and helping them be comfortable during their time at Arcare.

What are your favourite stories of working at your residence / with your team / with a client?

In my role I get to spend time with the residents firsthand. One resident is very particular about her belongings, and she takes particular care of her things. She is always very grateful when I can offer her the personalized service of bringing her things up into her room. I get to sit and talk to her for a while, and it really makes her happy.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

You need to have an abundance of patience every day
Always be prepared to provide top care and respect to not only the residents but also to your colleagues.
You need to be prepared to work closely with management to offer the best care for the residents
Residents come first. Every time!

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I like to go walking and Swimming in the ocean as well as reading.

What is your special talent that you enjoy doing outside of work? How did you learn this talent?

I am a very good cook. I have been learning since a young age traditional Hungarian cooking from my mum.

Can you share one fun fact about yourself? It could be an interesting experience that you had, a quirky talent or your favourite recipe.

Hungarian Goulash is my favourite to make in winter.

I love creating an inclusive environment for all residents that supports their lifestyle. I am passionate about enriching residents’ lives with a lifestyle program that tailors those choices.

It is supportive of the holistic approach to each individual resident, and it is a positive work environment.

What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?

I love supporting and enriching residents’ day to day life. It is very rewarding each day to know you have made a difference in a resident’s day through empathy, encouragement, and continual support.

What are your favourite stories of working at your residence / with your team / with a client?

Working at different sites to learn the Arcare way and get to experience how each community works and reflect on how important the lifestyle team is in residential aged care and in Arcare communities.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

It is very rewarding, and you are giving back to a generation that is sometimes within society overlooked and misunderstood.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Spending time with my three children, walking and soaking up the outdoors where possible.

What is your special talent that you enjoy doing outside of work? How did you learn this talent?

I am a dance teacher to children aged 1-7years as a Hobby, I danced all throughout my childhood.

Can you share one fun fact about yourself? It could be an interesting experience that you had, a quirky talent or your favourite recipe.

I am a retired professional dancer, I had the opportunity to travel the world and perform in theatres throughout USA, Europe, and Asia.

Do you have anything else you would like to share?

I am excited to join the Arcare Thornlands Team and welcoming our residents to their new home.

What do you enjoy about your role?

Making my clients smile and laugh every day.

How does this company differ from others you’ve worked for?

The support I get from all team members and management is amazing and second to none!

What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?

I love how everyone works as a team supporting each other and the thanks I get from the families is very gratifying. I feel a sense of belongingness with the residents and love making a difference in the lives of the elderly every single day.

What are your favourite stories of working at your residence / with your team / with a client?

I have so many stories from the last 6 months, but I think my favourite is when we had a little Shetland pony called Musketeer came to visit us, it was just the best. My residents couldn’t thank me enough for taking him around to their rooms, it made their day very memorable.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

I’ve been working in Aged Care for nearly 10 years and the job is very rewarding and satisfying. I find it a privilege to care for the elderly, it’s the best career move I could have made.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I do love going down to the beach and spending time with my grandchildren.

What is your special talent that you enjoy doing outside of work? How did you learn this talent?

I would have to say my special talent is being a nana (nanny) to 10 amazing grandkids and 3 step grandkids.

Can you share one fun fact about yourself?

I think it would have to be my laugh and my liveliness; everyone knows when I’m around.

What do you enjoy about your role?

What I find most rewarding about my career as a nurse is that I have the opportunity to help people in their most vulnerable, and unexpected, moments in life’s.

How does this company differ from others you’ve worked for?

I’d have to say support. I have never had as much support in previous jobs, nor amazing team members that all are willing to help you if you’re ever in need it.

What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?

Again support. Arcare have so many support groups and I believe it’s helped me grow personally as well as professionally. Aged Care gives me a sense of purpose.

What are your favourite stories of working at your residence / with your team / with a client?

Every shift you make difference to a resident’s quality of life, you’re able to give them a purpose. I love working in a job where you feel so appreciated for all your efforts.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

I would say to definitely show initiative and be empathetic and caring towards residents. Working in Aged Care makes my heart warm.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love reading and enjoy spending time with family and friends.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I love seeing how our clients are happy at Arcare Brighton. As part of my role I enjoy serving our clients, offering a friendly chat and listening to the clients individual stories. It makes my day to see our clients happy. The team here at Brighton is one of the best teams I have worked with during my four years with Arcare.

How does this company differ from others you’ve worked for?

Arcare is a very supportive company be it study wise and for working parents (specially women) Arcare is always ready to provide the perfect work life balance. The management team are helpful and caring which makes coming to work enjoyable and happy.

What do you love about Arcare and working in Aged Care?

I love how the staff at Arcare are supportive to each other and help each other out whenever possible. It really is Team Work.

Working in Aged Care gives me the opportunity to give back to the community and to feel grateful to be able to care for the elderly.

What are your favourite stories of working at your residence / with your team / with a client?

My favorite story of working at Arcare Brighton is the conversations I have with clients. I have a particular client who looks forward to seeing me every day and she enjoys intelligent conversing. We talk about books and life experiences. These types of relationships gives the clients and the staff a lift in their day. I am eternally grateful for this.

At Arcare Brighton the team are united and caring. Our manager Val is one of the best managers I have ever worked for. We enjoy events organized beautifully by the team here. Some of the events organized and enjoyed by all this year are, the Are you OK day, the Melbourne cup carnival and the International Nursing Day. All clients and staff member's alike enjoy these events.

What tips or advice would you give to someone looking to work in Aged Care?

Please come on board, join us to experience a happy, satisfying and healthy work life. You will feel grateful to be able to give back to the community where kindness is much needed.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

My hobbies are listening to music, cooking and going out with my friends.

What is your special talent that you enjoy doing outside of work? How did you learn this talent?

I cut and color hair and sew. Both I self taught and I better myself by watching YouTube tutorials.

Can you share one fun fact about yourself?

I love coloring my hair spontaneously, sometimes I get bored and whip out my colors and bleach and just go for it. Might I say my hair gets so very damaged that I have to cut it all off!

What does a personal support worker do

Personal support workers (PSWs, sometimes known as Personal Care Workers, Personal Care Attendants, or Personal Care Assistants), provide hands-on care and support to residents with personal care tasks, such as:

bathing
dressing
grooming, and;
toileting.

Aside from personal care, PSW work can involve:

helping residents with mobility (getting in and out of beds or chairs, or moving around the residence with mobility aids)
assistance at mealtimes (serving meals, cutting food into smaller portions, feeding those unable to feed themselves, adding thickener to fluids for those who have issues swallowing liquids)
making beds and tidying up residents’ rooms where appropriate
attending social activities with residents
organising appointments
making sure residents have enough personal supplies (and notifying RNs or families if needed)
administering medication (for PSWs with the relevant training and qualifications)
observing, monitoring, reporting, and documenting changes in residents’ wellbeing
providing emotional support and companionship to residents, as well as listening to concerns and offering reassurance,
liaising with families and offering them support too where appropriate.

Our Annual Arcare Star Awards recognises the efforts of our resilient team members across Australia. We received outstanding nominations submitted by clients, families and fellow team members within our Arcare communities.

The awards comprise five categories: Star Carer, Star Clinician, Star Residential Services, Star Leadership, Star Shared Services (National), and the CEO Award.

In celebration of Aged Care Employee Day on 7 August 2025, Arcare is pleased to announce the runner up and winners of the 2025 Arcare Star Awards below.

Star Carer Award 2025

NSW Runner up – Pauline G, Arcare Glenhaven
Pauline’s empathy, dedication, and warmth shine through in all she does. She brings comfort and dignity to every resident she supports. One family shared how she remembered their mother’s favourite clothes and polished her nails. These small acts of love mean everything to both residents and their loved ones.

QLD Runner up – Mary A, Arcare Slacks Creek
Through gentle, respectful care Mary-Grace makes residents feel truly special. She remembers personal preferences, coordinates outfits, and sits with residents to help them eat. One daughter shared how only Mary-Grace could remove her mother’s dental plate, thanks to deep trust. Residents will constantly call her name even when she’s not on shift.

VIC Runner up – Violetta M, Arcare Sydenham
For over 10 years at Arcare Sydenham SCU, Violetta has gone above and beyond for residents, many living with dementia. She learned Spanish and Italian to better communicate with multicultural residents, ensuring they feel seen and understood. Families praise her commitment, often finding her gently chatting, laughing, or embracing their loved ones.

NSW Winner – Pajaree (Joy) R, Arcare Belmont
Described as 'simply the best', Joy’s warmth, professionalism, and dedication make her a beacon of light at Arcare. She mentors new team members, supports her team, and uplifts residents with kindness. After one resident suffered a stroke, Joy’s personal support and cheerful presence helped him feel secure and valued. Residents and families feel lucky to know her.

QLD Winner – Lachlan H, Arcare Springwood
Lachlan brings warmth, humour, and dedication to every interaction- residents feel truly seen in his care. Described as “a bit extra, but that’s what’s needed,” he creates comfort and joy through conversation and presence. One family shared how he makes their dad feel special simply by giving him genuine time and attention.

VIC Winner – Sushmita G, Arcare Essendon
Sushmita’s compassion, professionalism, and calm dedication make her a beloved presence at Arcare Essendon. Families feel peace of mind in her care. One resident shared how, even when he was initially resistant to showers, Sushmita remained calm and patient, ensuring his dignity and comfort throughout.

Star Clinicians Award 2025

NSW Runner up – Rylan D, Arcare Belmont
Rylan is described as “the most reliable person you could meet,” known for his calm, compassionate care and unwavering support for residents and families. One daughter shared how he gently comforted her grieving mother, staying longer when needed and brightening her day. His professionalism and empathy define excellence in aged care.

QLD Runner up – Abhishek A, Arcare Thornlands
Abhishek is known for his composed, methodical approach- carefully monitoring medications, explaining each step with clarity, and never rushing. His presence reassures residents and families alike. One family shared how his kindness and patience helped their mother feel completely at ease. Always smiling and thorough, he earns trust through consistent, compassionate care.

VIC Runner up – Maria E, Arcare Surrey Hills
Maria will crouch to eye level with a resident to explain care gently and by name, restoring dignity amid confusion. Her clinical skill, compassion, and communication are praised by families, who feel heard and informed. She’s described as “exceptional,” “exemplary,” and consistently goes above and beyond in every detail.

NSW Winner – Tayla N, Arcare Belmont
Described as “a gift to aged care,” Tayla is trusted deeply by families for her clinical skill, empathy, and calm presence. An example provided was her support to a resident going through cancer treatment. She did this with discretion and care, dressing wounds daily and honouring his privacy. Families say simply, “Tayla is the nurse you want.”

QLD Winner – Joanne O, Arcare Springwood
Known for her empathy, teamwork, and leadership, Jo advocates for residents, resolves team issues, and listens deeply. Jo helped create a calm, dignified end-of-life experience for one resident- supporting all with compassion and strength. Respected by colleagues and residents alike, Jo leads with empathy and is known for calmly resolving issues with care.

VIC Winner – Rebecca S, Arcare Portarlington
Nominated by both families and colleagues and described as “a real earth angel,” Rebecca brings comfort and calm during life’s hardest moments. She sat with a resident’s family during end-of-life care, offered food, support, and space to grieve. Known for her clinical growth and warmth, families often ask for her by name- even on her rostered days off.

Star Residential Services Award 2025

NSW Runner Up – Resom G, Arcare Glenhaven
Resom is known for his exceptional work ethic, professionalism, and warm attitude. Always punctual and reliable, he maintains Arcare to the highest standard. Residents, families, and colleagues regularly praise his attention to detail and care. His pride in his work makes him an indispensable and respected part of the team.

QLD Runner up – Mark S, Arcare Noosa
The go-to problem solver at Arcare, Mark is described as “marvellous”. From fixing IT issues to repainting rooms, he does it all with skill and speed. When a courtyard fixture broke, he took it home, repaired it, and returned it the next day. Residents say the place would be "falling apart" without him!

VIC Runner up – Claire C, Arcare Keysborough
From café to care, Claire is the quiet force who makes Arcare feel like home. Known for learning residents’ names and preferences, she creates a warm, welcoming space. “Nothing is ever too much trouble,” one family shared- her kindness and commitment bring daily comfort to both residents and families.

NSW Winner – Salote M, Arcare Oatlands
Radiating warmth and professionalism, Salote creates genuine connections with residents and families. When a grieving family needed privacy, she transformed the hair salon into a peaceful space, complete with coffee and signage. Her empathy, attention to detail, and unwavering kindness make her an irreplaceable presence.

QLD Winner – Ashwinder R, Arcare Parkwood
Known for flawless meal service and care, Ashwinder once stepped into the kitchen to assist the chef during peak hours and another time resolving a resident’s complaint by offering a replacement and improving kitchen processes. She remembers every resident’s preferences, ensures meals are plated beautifully, and leads with calm professionalism.

VIC Winner – Rosenda C, Arcare Cheltenham
A 2022 runner-up and nominated by residents and families, Rose brings energy, creativity, and heart to Lifestyle. She has dressed as a leprechaun for St Patrick’s Day, transforming the space with music and joy. Residents say, “She gives me confidence every day,” while families credit her for “bringing light back” into their loved ones’ lives.

Star Leadership Award 2025

This award recognises people who show: a clear purpose, value, direction and performance expectation for their team, department or project; timely and effective decision making, reporting, and risk management skills; a commitment to safety, quality systems, social and environmental responsibility, setting and meeting high standards and helping others achieve them; support creativity, collaboration, positivity, and innovation; help team members expand their skills, confidence, talent and thinking; and giving their own time to advise and guide team members’ careers.

NSW Runner up – Huan Yu, Arcare Warriewood
A compassionate, hands-on leader at Arcare, Huan leads by example- covering night RN shifts or driving the bus when needed. He consistently puts residents and team members first. Known for his integrity and professionalism, Huan fosters a high-performing, respectful environment where care standards are upheld and everyone feels supported.

QLD Runner up – Angela M, Arcare Pimpama
A calm, supportive, and approachable Manager, Angela leads with fairness and professionalism. She fosters team unity, recognises contributions, and prioritises resident care. Through inclusive events and clear communication, she builds a respectful culture at Arcare- creating an environment where both team members and residents feel genuinely valued, empowered, and engaged.

VIC Runner up – Hersh S, Arcare Keysborough
With 15 nominations, Hersh is recognised for his empathy, and integrity. He inspires trust, fosters growth, and creates a positive, inclusive environment for all. Known for his approachability and clear communication, Hersh consistently supports team development, promotes wellbeing, and drives excellence in care. His leadership at Arcare has strengthened the community.

NSW Winner – Ellen H, Arcare Belmont
Ellen joined the team during a challenging period and transformed it with calm, hands-on leadership. Known for answering call bells, assisting residents during walkarounds, and staying reachable at all hours, she leads by example. Team members feel heard, supported, and inspired by her approachable style, professionalism, and deep commitment to care.

QLD Winner – Rajwinder K, Arcare Eight Mile Plains
Raj leads with empathy, urgency, and heart- resolving concerns thoughtfully while uplifting her team through openness and example. She’s known for empowering team members through development and recognition, and diffuses situations with calm professionalism. Her leadership creates a positive, inclusive environment where residents, families, and team members feel truly supported.

VIC Winner – Hassan M, Arcare Ringwood
Hassan is a steadfast leader who fosters a respectful, empowering environment. A 2024 runner-up, Hassan leads with empathy and professionalism - supporting growth, ensuring quality care, and creating a community where team members and residents feel valued.

Star Shared Services National 2025

This award was open to support roles outside of specific residences. The Star Support award looks at those who provide exceptional service and meaningful support to our clients and colleagues, show proficiency, humility, initiative, and reliability, are consistently friendly and helpful, and have a strong commitment to the broader Arcare team.

National Runner up – Brandon Williams, Finance Business Partner, Finance
Brandon has been instrumental in the success of Arcare’s BI Dashboards. With expert knowledge and support, he empowers teams to use data effectively. From training managers to aligning metrics with strategy, Brandon drives a culture of informed decision-making, making a measurable impact across the organisation every day.

National Winner – James Aitken, Visual Producer, Marketing
A trusted, collaborative presence in Marketing. With creativity, and reliability, James has elevated Arcare’s visual storytelling and uplifts his team. In early 2025, he helped lead a major visual direction shift, bringing clarity and engagement across platforms. Organised with his time, James makes a lasting impact through his professionalism.

CEO Award 2025

This award recognises the delivery of outstanding and meaningful support to colleagues, residents and the broader community, strong alignment with Arcare’s values, proven ability to lead by example, inspire others, and take proactive steps in challenging situations, consistent reliability in responsibilities combined with a humble approach to collaboration and achievement, tangible contributions that have positively shaped the environment, relationships and outcomes within Arcare, highlights a high level of expertise in their role alongside on-going efforts to develop and refine their skills and embodies a welcoming attitude, willingness to assist others and creates a supportive and inclusive culture.

National Runner up – Janet R, Regional Support Manager, Operations VIC
A go-to for any residence in distress, Janet restores morale, compliance, and care standards. She has brought in her puppies to lift spirits, stayed on residence for months, and led teams through reaccreditation. Admired for “never saying no” and “bringing everyone along,” her leadership leaves every team stronger and united.

National Winner – Antony J, Network Administrator, IT
Closing 5,249 tickets this year, Antony often works unpaid overtime and is known to drive five hours to support NSW residences. He led the Aranda IT setup and consistently helps others with patience and professionalism. Also a registered minister, he has conducted religious ceremonies for Arcare residences in his own time, earning the affectionate nickname “the new priest for Arcare.”

Arcare Hove Careers

Arcare Hove is opening mid 2026 and will be Arcare’s first aged care residence in South Australia. This opening marks Arcare’s expansion into Adelaide and the introduction of its approach to care and workplace culture within the local aged care sector.

Recruitment is currently underway for a range of roles at Arcare Hove, including Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Personal Support Workers, catering, environmental services, lifestyle, and support roles.

Facilities and Work Environment

Arcare Hove is a modern, purpose-built residence designed to support safe and efficient working practices. Facilities include contemporary staff amenities, a dedicated staff room, and an onsite café with complimentary coffee available during shifts.

The residence is located close to public transport and local amenities, with parking available for team members. Security and safety procedures are in place to support a well-managed and secure working environment.
